Vancouver features one of the most vibrant and diverse Asian food scenes in North America, with Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, and Thai influences. From authentic dim sum in Richmond to fresh sashimi in Kitsilano, sizzling Korean BBQ in Coquitlam, and fragrant bowls of pho in East Vancouver, the city is a haven for food lovers. Apart from standard sit-down restaurants, Vancouver has night markets, food courts, and omakase establishments. As an American, "Canadian food" isn't much different from American food. Try the poutine once, but where Vancouver really shines is the Chinese and Japanese food. I'll break down my top 5 picks now!
Hoi An Café is a hidden gem that I love for its authentic Central Vietnamese cuisine. The Bun Bo Hue is a standout dish, with broth that is deeply flavorful, with the perfect balance of spicy, savory, and aromatic notes from lemongrass and chili. Hoi An Café’s Bun Bo Hue is a must-try for anyone craving authentic Vietnamese cuisine.
Chinatown BBQ is a must-visit for anyone who loves authentic Chinese barbecue. Their roast duck is exceptional, with crispy skin and tender meat that’s full of flavor. The BBQ pork and soy chicken are also standout dishes, each prepared with traditional techniques that highlight the quality of the ingredients. The beef brisket curry offers a rich and satisfying option for those seeking something hearty.
Kingyo is one of my favorite spots for Japanese food because the flavors are just unforgettable. I love their stone-grilled Kobe beef. It’s so much fun to cook it just how I like, and the meat practically melts in your mouth. Their tan-tan noodles have this amazing balance of spice and umami that always hits the spot, and the bluefin tuna carpaccio is so fresh and delicate
Hei Hei Rice Roll serves some of the most delicious rice noodle rolls I’ve ever had - silky, delicate sheets of rice noodles wrapped around fillings like fresh shrimp, tender beef, or savory pork. Each roll is perfectly steamed, with a soft, melt-in-your-mouth texture that pairs beautifully with their light soy-based sauce. Perfect and light meal to start your day.
Miku serves the best Aburi Oshi Sushi I've ever had, without being too pricey. The flame-seared technique adds a rich, smoky flavor that perfectly pairs with their fresh salmon. Who knew sushi was better in cube form? I sure didn't. Miku is a must-visit every time I am in Vancouver.
